During his lifetime, internationally celebrated New Zealand thinker and author Lloyd Geering published numerous thought-provoking books on the nature of religious belief - and was also tried for heresy. This book critiques Geering's now well known religious atheism in terms of its philosophical underpinnings. It looks at the justifications of 'Geeringism', in particular his rejection of the cognitive content (and other aspects) of Christian belief, and illuminates not only the specifics of his approach to the age-old question 'How are we to live?', but also the wider set of ideas from which such issues have arisen.

"This is an edited book consisting of ten essays which summarize and critique different aspects of Lloyd Geering's works. Most of the contributions are from New Zealand scholars (Lloyd Geering is also from NZ).
The contributions are as follows:
1) "Reading Lloyd Geering" examines the language and style of Geering's writing, the nature of his theology and some of the limitations of his scholarship, such as his lack of genuine dialogue.
2) "Are Religious Beliefs Human Projections" explores the idea of projectionism based on Feuerbach's thesis that gods are the product of creative human imagination.
3) "Secularization: An outmoded Concept?" is a short essay in which it is argued that the 'great global secular world' that Geering identifies and advocates for is not actually happening.
4) "Resurrexit: Geering and the End of Resurrection" is a nicely written chapter that examines what contemporary scholarship is saying about the historical problems for the resurrection and its meaning.
5) "Revisionary Theology: Realism and Non-Realism" argues that we must explore alternative concepts of the traditional theistic omniGod before reverting to Geering's conclusion of a 'non-realist' God.
6) "Religion without God" examines the influence of Feuerbach and the meaning of theology if God is a human projection, looking at what it means for Geering to stay within the religious tradition and some dangers associated with this.
7) "The Inventing of Myths, Gods, and Paradise" is an insightful chapter looking at Geering's work as the construction of new 'myths' and it's potential contribution to contemporary NZ society.
8) "Lloyd Geering without Church" discusses the end of the institutional church to the growth of a global faith.
9) "Does Geering's thought have a Mystical Side?" questions exactly that with attention to Martin Buber's influence on Geering's spirituality.
10) "Secular Supersessionism: Geering, Jews, and Judaism" suggests there is a modern secular version of Christian anti-Judaism implicit in his work.
Overall the book is very insightful. The contributions are well written and scholarly in nature. It is a breath of fresh air amongst the typical undiscerning and dismissive rhetoric usually directed against Geering's thought."
