"This almanac was a fixture of my childhood. Even though my father was "modern" and no longer planted by the signs, my grandparents did. And for all you moderns out there, I've gone back to it. If you don't want to be "exposed" to astrological info, don't buy this book and then whine about it like some numbwit did last year. The weather and astronomical info is lovely as well. I would like to see more articles on older ways of gardening and preserving. Your audience is primarily homesteaders so this would make a lot of sense. Perhaps a few years ago, your book was only a curiosity, but today many of us are interested in discovering the old ways again."

The Old Farmer Almanac 2014 Old Farmer Almanac 0046442013390 Books Reviews
- This is going right back to .
I bought this for my 8 year old son for Christmas. I was excited to flip through it and check everything out when I noticed that on practically every page, there are advertisements. I saw weight loss drugs, male enhancement drugs, marital aids...you name it. I don't understand why I paid $13 for a book of ads with facts as filler. And I didn't see this mentioned in other reviews. Am I missing some knowledge about this almanac or almanacs in general? I'm scrambling now to find something different. SUPER UNHAPPY. - I buy several brands a year, but this is always my favorite . I also buy one for my nephew, the Storm Chaser each year. So much wisdom and great reading. A must have for those who garden or just want to know the weather. When I was young an gardened, I aways planted by "the signs". I live in rural WV and we considered "the signs" a gift from our creator. There is a chart that tells you when to plant, weed and even when to cut your hair so it will grow faster, or when to cut it to make it grow slower. A method I've used all of my life and it was taught to me by my grandparents, who were born in 1890 and 1900. A must have to live a better life. Also the pages make great sheets to glue and use for scrapbooking. A wonderful gift for the arrival of a new baby, so they will know all about the year they were born. I am guilty of not throwing mine away and have some in hard backed book. Great gift for any age. Learn about the stars, history, current events, so many stories and wisdom, too much to mention. Teaches about the phases of the moon and why dogs are more active in a full moon.
- This year, we were a little late buying our annual copy of the Old Farmer's Almanac. Here in New Hampshire, the shelves were already bare. Our choices were almanacs with sort-of similar names, or lookalike covers, but... no. Really, no. There's only ONE Old Farmer's Almanac, so we ordered it from .
The others are okay. And, even this almanac includes a lot of stuff we'll never read, even if we use the handy-dandy punched hole to hang it from a nail in the outhouse... err... bathroom.
Seriously, this is the only almanac with such consistently reliable weather forecasts.
If you want to plan your ski vacation for a week with almost guaranteed snow, or a summer holiday with non-stop sunshine and comfortable temperatures, THIS is the almanac to own.
Some people may rely on Punxsutawney Phil to tell them when winter will (finally!) be over. We trust the Old Farmer's Almanac for that prediction, and a good idea of what the weather will be, every day of the year.
Accept no substitutes. This IS the guide you want. - This venerable publication is always fun to read! I always wonder how accurate the weather forecasts are, but I have been too lazy to check that out!
Weather. . . . I live in the Harrisburg, PA area and I see the prognostication that weather will be a little cooler--and drier--during the winter. So, colder, but less snow. We shall see! My old hometown is in western Illinois. Forecast for the winter? Temperatures will be cooler than usual and there will be less snow than normal. Again, we shall see how well the predictions do.
Interesting features. "A Life of Pie." How to create a pie crust (I am lazy and tend to be store bought crusts). Recipes--Meat pie, Chocolate chess pie. Then, a brief article on beet recipes!
And on and on.
Another nice publication in this series. . . . - Everyone should have this almanac. Aside from the tidbits of information such as when to plant things, recipes, and interesting stories, there are weather forecasts (which are very accurate), meteor shower information, and much more. The best thing about it is that it costs only about as much as a typical magazine, but where you might only read People or Time once then stick it in a box or the trash, this you will refer back to throughout the year.
I bought the hardcover edition which is a little bit more expensive, but they look as good on your shelf as Readers Digest, and you can read them even after the year is through for the articles.
Oh, and it makes a great "bathroom book" ) - I look forward to the new Almanac every September as a harbinger of fall.
I've been buying and reading the good old paperback version of the Almanac for 50 years, starting in my early teenage years.
All the basic stuff like the astronomic tables, tide tables and the like are still there, of course.
The weather predictions, which are pretty vague to say the least, are still there too.
It's not likely I'll cancel any picnic plans for next summer because of them though!
Plus interesting articles, ads for esoteric products and services (unfortunately the Rosicrucians stopped advertising some years ago) and the puzzles and anecdotes keep me coming back year after year. - This almanac was a fixture of my childhood. Perhaps a few years ago, your book was only a curiosity, but today many of us are interested in discovering the old ways again.
- Lots of ads(irrelevant ads) fill this book. It's hard to find information that you need. I am getting ads for gardening and home improvement in the mail box every day and they go to trash bin. I cannot believe you can even sell it for money.
