A man and woman with a complicated past find a second chance at romance in this Animal Magnetism novel from New York Times bestselling author Jill Shalvis.

After a tragic stint in the National Guards, Adam Connelly returns to Idaho and to Belle Haven, the animal shelter he owns with his brothers. All Adam wants is to be alone. Then he opens the door to the past—the woman whose heart he once broke. Still gorgeous, still tough-as-nails, but this time, unusually vulnerable.

Holly learned the hard way to never depend on a man for anything. Now, of all men, Adam is the last one she wants to see, and the only one she needs. Her father has gone missing in the Bitterroot Mountains and she could use someone with tracking skills to help find him.

For Holly and Adam, each with their ghosts, a trek this desperate, this unpredictable, and this intimate, will have its share of risks—including opening their hearts one more time.

"Jill Shavis is always an automatic buy for me, but I found Holly to be a self-centered, entitled, pushy brat who only thought about what she wanted. I stopped @ 70% & nothing could make me want to finish the book."

This was an excellent part of the Animal Magnetism series. I have been looking forward to this one for a while and it didn't disappoint. Without giving away any spoilers, I will tell you this is about Adam and we got glimpses of him in the other book. I really liked the writing in this, as well as the humor. I thought the editing was stellar and I would recommend that anyone reading this series starter at the beginning. However, you don't have to. This was a great addition and I look forward to the next one. Adam and Holly had some fiery heat together that just made this story better for me. I hate stories that have no plot and this one had lots of plot!!

  • Let me start by saying that I recommend this book even though it feels as if it had been written in a hurry and needs some better editing. I'm a huge Jill Shalvis fan and she is one of my few "auto-buy" authors. I had been looking forward to reading Adam's story and his torturous path to a HEA made for good reading. That said, there was a lot of "filler" in this book, lots of stuff that seemed to add to the word count but not to the story; for example there was WAY too much about the dogs -- and I am a serious dog lover. I found the Grif-Kate part of the story to be one of the highlights (more pressure for Ms. Shalvis -- high expectations) rather than the H/h of this book. There were also some other issues which took away from the story the sex happened way sooner than usual and reduced the tension for the rest of the book. There were a few plot devices which were just too obvious -SPOILER for example the accident and rescue? come on!! Unworthy of Ms. Shalvis... END SPOILER -- and the whole business with her ex husband was silly and didn't ring true. But on the whole this was fun book and one gets wrapped up in the Shalvis writing magic.
  • My Review
LOVED this book...and Jill Shalvis remains at the TOP of my favorite contemporary authors list.

Adam was part of the special forces and lost half his patrol in an ambush in Afghanistan two years before this book takes place. He's still haunted by that event and is still having issues coping. Now he trains Search and Rescue dogs, as well as organizes search and rescue events. BUT he doesn't go out on the actual missions anymore because of his PTSD. At the beginning of this book, that all changes when he is called out for a rescue where he's the closest and best bet. It's a successful rescue, but just proves to him once again that his PTSD is still lingering. But when Holly comes to him for help, there's no one else to help her and he's sure not going to let the former love of his life up on the mountain with a snowstorm coming in on her own.

Holly had her heart broken when Adam left and never looked back. It broke again the next year when she jumped into a foolhardy marriage with a guy much too old for her who couldn't keep it in his pants with the young coeds he worked with every day. She's had a hard time coming back from all that, but she's older and more self-confident now. At least that's what she thinks until she truly starts interacting with Adam. He's so much more than the boy she knew...and she loved that boy. As a man, he's even more irresistible, but Holly knows that path is just asking for another heartbreak. Adam considers himself too scarred to be willing to ever go into a real relationship again.

Yeah, you all know me and what I love. I do love a wounded, angsty hero and Adam is one of the best. He has all these issues, but omg, he is such a PERFECT hero. He trains dogs and his life is search and rescue. He doesn't want to hurt Holly and does everything he can to keep that from happening. Then there is a scene at the end of the book...OMG, the emotion. LOVE! Everything about him is simply panty-melting. There is so much emotion and heart to both these characters. Jill Shalvis wrote them both incredibly well and I loved every moment of their story.

I have loved this series and cannot wait for Grif & Kate's book. The glimpses we saw of them in this one were awesome! CANNOT WAIT!
