Until You The Fall Away Series Penelope Douglas 9780451477118 Books Reviews

  • So I was undecided about reading Until You, Jared’s pov of Bully. Was it going to be another Grey? A snoozefest? Christian’s pov was dryer than sandpaper; Jared’s was full of emotion and angst. And I loved it.

Obviously, some parts of the story are a little repetitive from Bully, but overall, Penelope did the best job she could of making this a fresh take on the story. We get to see some things in Jared’s life that we didn’t before, some situations were explained better, and of course, more Jared. YES.

Penelope Douglas can write. She slits your heart open with the emotions evoked from her characters.

"I wanted her to hurt. I didn’t want her to hurt. I hated her. I loved her. I wanted to violate her body in a hundred different ways. I wanted to keep her safe."

God, Jared was such a troubled teen, and being in his head was an exhausting whirlpool of pain, anger, loss, and unrequited love. Volatile would be the best way to describe him. His confliction over Tate was palpable, and I literally ached for him. Makes me remember that there are always two sides to the story. And his was done perfectly.

So we get the interworkings of an eighteen-year-old boy’s head, and man, it’s pretty naughty. Bully wasn’t tame, but Until You definitely kicked up the heat. I loved Tate and Jared in Bully, and that’s what pushed me to read this one. It really didn’t disappoint.

Did Until You redeem Jared? Eh, I’ve been ship Jared from the very beginning. I never disliked him like I know many have. But, if you didn’t like Jared in Bully, I would say his pov did a great job of humanizing, breaking him down and explaining each one of his actions. He was a bully, but in Until You, he was nothing but a young man in pain. A fantastically written retelling of Bully in Jared’s eyes.
  • In this book we get inside Jared's head. After reading Bully and getting little tidbits of some the things that happened that made him turn against Tate, and seeing some the things he did to her, we now get the full story.

Jared and Tate have been best buds for years. As they grow into their teen years together Jared starts to have more feelings for Tate than just friendship. He decides to visit his dad for the summer and that summer changes everything. When he gets home he can't wait to see Tate, she was what he was looking forward the most, but his first encounter with her doesn't go as planned. Soon he doesn't have enough hours in the day to let out all the the rage he has towards her. He decides terrorizing her is what he'll do! Yes it's perfect right? When she leaves to study abroad he can finally have some respite now that she's not right door, but the year is up too soon, or is it the other way around? Now that she's back things have changed. She's not the same girl. She's still has all of the good qualities she had before, but she now has even more things that catch his attention. He can't stay away but he needs to because his life is so complicated and he doesn't need another distraction.

I loved Jared's point of view! we only got to the cusp of the issues going on with Jared's family in Bully and in Until You we finally get to see why he does some of the things he does. I fell in love with him a little bit more after finishing this story. So many ups and downs, with a brilliant ending!

'Yesterday lasts forever. Tomorrow comes never. Until You.'
  • Jared comes from a dysfunctional house. His mother is an alcoholic and his dad left when he was little.
When Jared is 10- a new family moves next door to him, bringing a vivacious girl, Tatum (tate) into his life.
They immediately bond and become best friends. They come to love each other and begin to fall in love.
At age 14, Jared goes away one summer to visit his father for the first time - he returns a completely changed boy.
He spends the next two years tormenting and bullying Tate.
Tate goes away for a year for school in France. She returns a much stronger girl. She resolves to fight Jared and not put up with his bullying anymore.

This book is completely from Jared's POV. The first book, Bully is from Tate's POV.
Even though this book can be read as a standalone - you should really read Bully first.
This book is not just the flip side of the same story. It's different, deep and incredibly satisfying.

The author writes a great story. Jared's character is complex, but interesting. You want Jared to get his HEA. He needs it. He is a lost boy that doesn't believe he is good enough for Tate. He is is no way a perfect kid. He truly is mean to Tate. He fights. He sleeps around. He drinks. He disrespects adults. So how does this anti-hero become the hero? Read to find out.

The HEA is wonderful at the end. It's not a 'wrapped in a bow' type of ending. You know that there are issues still needed to be worked on - what happens after graduation? What about Jared's dad? What about Jared's brother? Jared's best friend also seems to be lost as well. Many lose ends, but not enough to make you feel like you don't get enough closure for this book.

There are a few steamy sex scenes, but it's not a central aspect of this book.

Some people may not like how Tate puts up with Jared's cruelty. I think the author does a good job delving into their childhood years (ages 10-14) to show how strong of a friendship that they had. They were inseparable. They had a unique bond. Tate losing her mother, being raised by her father. Jared basically raising himself, Tate being the foundation of love and understanding that he doesn't have anywhere else. Unconditional love - that begins as innocent children, blooming to teenage love.

They are young. The book ends with them as 18 year olds. So very young, but they have had to grow up quickly.
It will be interesting to read the author's next book to see how their relationship progresses.

The author does such a great job giving the reader insight into Jared's feelings and reasons for the things that he does. This poor kid has been through so much. He does make several mistakes along the way. But Tate brings out the best in him, helps assuage his angry and need to push good things away.

It was a bit angst-y, but tolerable. They don't sit around feeling sorry for themselves. There is sadness and pain at times, but no spiraling of negative feelings; no major misunderstanding; no weepy female heroines. I enjoying reading how Jared was able to overcome his negative feelings about himself, to find himself back to Tate.

This book was a wonderful read.
It was sweet, a bit angst-y, sexy and interesting book.
I highly recommend reading this (please read Bully first, though).
    Enjoy.
